BRITISH WOMEN WRITERS AND THE FRENCH REVOLUTION

CALL FOR PAPERS: 1996 MLA

"BRITISH WOMEN WRITERS AND THE FRENCH REVOLUTION"

To what extent and in what ways did the French Revolution inspire and influence Romantic-era British women writers? Scholars have begun to explore Wollstonecraft's and Helen Maria Williams' writings on the revolution, and to a lesser extent Charlotte Smith's, but on the whole little work has been done on the revolution's impact on Romantic-era women writers. Papers on lesser-known writings are esp. encouraged (e.g., by Anne Plumptre, Ann Yearsley, Helen Craik, Mary Robinson). All theoretical positions welcome, but all papers should also examine the role of gender. 2 pg. abstracts or papers by March 10, 1996, to Adriana Craciun, U.C. Davis Washington Center, 2301 M St. NW, 5th Floor, Washington, D.C. 20037; aacraciun@ucdavis.edu.
